Guyana

Located on South America’s coast but traditionally considered part of the Commonwealth Caribbean, Guyana is an English-speaking country known for its calypso music and British colonial architecture. Guyana is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations and its capital, Georgetown, is also the headquarters of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Agriculture and extractive industries are the largest components of Guyana’s economy.

Trademark Rights

Trademarks and service marks are eligible for registration in Guyana with the caveat that service marks must be based on the extension of a UK trademark. The following rules and regulations apply:

  • Prior use: None required

  • Classification: Local Classes (single class filing only)

  • Registration term: 7 years from the date of filing and renewable for 14 year periods 

  • Non-use vulnerability: 5 years
