N. Patrick Hely, Esq.
Patrick joined Caribbean IP as a member in 2016 after completing a federal judicial clerkship with Hon. Lanny King of the United States District Court for the Western District of Kentucky. Prior to serving as a law clerk, Patrick focused his legal practice primarily on business litigation, including of intellectual property matters. He brings his litigation experience to Caribbean IP to complement the firm’s prosecution practice with enhanced enforcement options.
As a law student, Patrick served as an executive editor of the Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law, a member of the Vanderbilt Bar Association’s board of governors (the student bar association), and the treasurer of the Vanderbilt Intellectual Property Association. He also earned a position on the Vanderbilt Moot Court Board based on his performance in the intramural moot court competition. Patrick’s student note was selected for publication on a competitive basis. It examined the World Intellectual Property Association's (WIPO) efforts to improve access by the visually impaired to copyrighted works and proposed a market-based alternative. While a law student, he worked as a summer extern law clerk for a judge of the United States Court of Appeals and as a summer clerk for a private, general practice.
Prior to attending law school, Patrick earned a bachelor’s of arts degree from Vanderbilt University, magna cum laude with departmental honors in economics. His pre-legal work experience includes work as a quantitative research analyst for a Washington, D.C.-based best practices insight company and as a research extern for the State of Tennessee.
Patrick is a member of the Florida Bar as well as being admitted to practice before all three federal district courts in Florida. He is a member of the Emerging Issues Committee of the International Trademark Association (INTA). He is also a member of the Pharmaceutical Trade Marks Group (PTMG), Asociacion Interamericana de la Propiedad Intelectual (ASIPI), the American Bar Association (ABA), and the Palm Beach County Bar Association. He has authored or co-authored a number of articles related to intellectual property, especially concerning the Caribbean region.
In his free time, Patrick enjoys tennis, reading, and following the Vanderbilt University Commodores. He hopes to one day have watched a game in every Major League Baseball team's home stadium.
